Founder and CEO of School of Hard Knocks, Murray started his clothing business in the early 90’s appealing to mostly inner city kids by tapping into the psychology of their demographic.
Murray was able to reach these urban kids by understanding the slogans and styles that they would buy and in turn, was able to grow his business into the empire that it is today. Murray’s company, School of Hard Knocks, currently makes $27 million in sales. Gerard does a wonderful job of teaching you about the business and the creative thought process in his seminar, How to Start Your Own T-Shirt Line, on LearningAnnex.com.
Murray takes you through his journey into the business step by step, how he got started, who he trusts and how to keep your products authentic for your market. Murray named the company “School of Hard Knocks” as a reminder to express “what they have been through, to get to where they are today." He formulated his popular slogans around a theme of logo designs with a serious meaning. “Never forget where you came from, and always keep it real”. Murray believed that anyone, a doctor, stay at home mom, younger adults finishing school, could relate to his slogans. Murray was able to strike a deal with a licensing and manufacturing company when he blazed his slogan “Queens 7” on a line of t-shirts which caught the eye of the mainstream apparel industry. Because the slogan was localized and popular in areas of NY, Nesi Apparel Group, approached him and he was able company that was able to mass market his shirts. Soon after, Murray was then able to delve into sweat shirts and pants, children’s lines; denim and leather wear, evoking the essence of energetic urban living.
Murray delivers very important pointers on how to be successful in the T-Shirt business and what it takes to make it in the greater world of fashion apparel. Murray’s seminar is a must-take for anyone interested in getting into the business end of the T-Shirt fashion world.
